Description
A young, city-bred woman named Mohini enters marriage and finds herself drawn into the rhythms and expectations of a traditional “Big House” in Behula, a village near Calcutta. As she learns the language of customs, rituals, and domestic authority, she also becomes a bridge between two worlds—the modern sensibility of the city and the lived culture of the countryside. Through her experiences, the novel explores how identity is negotiated within family structures, how tradition can both shelter and constrain, and how love, duty, and belonging are tested over time. Bhabani Bhattacharya’s clear, humane storytelling—capable of warmth and quiet tension—turns an apparently simple domestic premise into a thoughtful study of cultural change and personal adaptation.
