Description

In the sweltering summer of 1968, eleven-year-old Delphine and her younger sisters, Vonetta and Fern, are sent from Brooklyn to Oakland, California, to stay with the mother who abandoned them years ago. Upon arrival, they find their mother, Cecile, distant and unwelcoming, immersing them in a world of radical politics and the Black Panther movement. As they navigate this unfamiliar landscape and seek answers about their past, the girls are thrust into a journey of self-discovery and resilience. This poignant and humorous novel explores themes of family, identity, and the search for belonging against the backdrop of a nation in turmoil.
