To Be Taught, If Fortunate

Description

Ariadne and her three crewmates set out on a mission to survey four habitable worlds, but the real journey unfolds in the quiet, deliberate ways they learn from one another. In a story driven by conversation as much as discovery, four “nice people” build trust, share hopes and doubts, and wrestle with what it means to live well—together—under the pressures of duty and uncertainty. With its gentle, character-forward approach, the book becomes a highly political meditation on the human condition: how we treat strangers, how we make choices, and what we owe to the future. Becky Chambers’ signature warmth and lyrical clarity turn everyday ethics into something expansive, inviting readers to consider the lessons we’re taught, the ones we choose, and the ones we’re lucky enough to receive.

this is so tough. the first 80 pages of this book were so good, easily 5/5. but then i went to bed and i stepped away from reading for days. then today i decided i had to finish the book. the problem is the second half of the book was like being repeatedly beaten with yard sticks while tied to an worn down recliner. it wasn’t anything like the start of the book and so i hated it. it was a 1/5. but was that because i took days off reading then forced myself to read again OR was it because the 2nd half really is shit? i don’t know so i’m just splitting the difference.
