They Can't Kill Us Until They Kill Us

Description

A searing collection of essays and cultural criticism, this book traces how art, memory, and language respond to violence—especially the kind that targets Black life and tries to erase its aftermath. Moving between personal reflection and sharp analysis, the author follows the ways communities grieve, organize, and keep speaking even when the world insists silence is safer. With lyrical intensity and meticulous attention to history, the writing explores themes of survival, protest, and the politics of representation. Part memoir, part manifesto, it captures the urgency of witnessing and the power of storytelling to refuse erasure.

super introspective essays equating music and the time it was made with the life adburraqib was living during it and has lived since. at his most profound, hanif details grief and how to live with it rather than despite it. unfortunately like most distilled pop culture snapshots, 10 years out it has not aged well. but no one can blame abdurraqib for his praise or idolization of artists we did not yet know were unworthy of the praise.
