Description
In this haunting and provocative novel, Isserley drives the remote highways of northern Scotland, picking up solitary male hitchhikers in a calculated routine that conceals a sinister purpose. What begins as a seemingly straightforward predatory narrative transforms into a profound exploration of humanity, consciousness, and moral ambiguity when the arrival of an idealistic visitor forces Isserley to confront her own emotional depths and desires. Through Faber's masterful storytelling, readers discover that beneath the surface—quite literally under the skin—the line between human and alien, predator and victim, becomes disturbingly blurred. The novel's power lies in its ability to make us empathize with a character whose very nature challenges our moral instincts, forcing us to question what truly defines humanity. A stunning meditation on identity, exploitation, and the capacity for connection, Under the Skin is both beautiful and deeply unsettling.

This book is all about the big reveal; despite the synopsis sounding pretty self explanatory - "seductive female driver picks up hitchhikers who wouldn't be missed if they disappear" - Under the Skin isn't what you think it is and doesn't make much sense until about halfway through when the realisation finally you. Faber teases with slight hints and nudges throughout the first hundred pages, weaving an eerily compelling mystery.. but after the reveal things level out and end on a rather poignant, melancholic note.
