Description
Set against the backdrop of Charles II's Restoration, this novel chronicles the tumultuous journey of Robert Merivel, a physician navigating the treacherous currents of court life. Once a favored confidant of the king, Merivel's world unravels through scandal and disgrace, forcing him to flee the opulence of London for the stark realities of the English countryside. As he grapples with plague, fire, and war, Merivel embarks on a profound quest for self-restoration, seeking to reclaim a life and identity lost amidst the chaos. Rose Tremain masterfully weaves a tale of personal redemption against the grand canvas of historical upheaval, exploring themes of mortality, purpose, and the true meaning of a life lived authentically.
