Description
In this poignant memoir, Michelle Zauner explores the profound grief and complex identity that followed her mother's death. As she navigates the raw pain of loss, Zauner finds solace and connection through the shared language of food, particularly the Korean dishes that were central to her upbringing and her relationship with her mother. The narrative weaves together vivid memories of family, culture, and the struggle to reconcile her Korean heritage with her American life. Through lyrical prose and unflinching honesty, Zauner's story is a powerful testament to love, memory, and the enduring bonds that shape us.

i have a lot of problems with this book and none of them are the usual points being made by the other 1 star reviews. i don’t mind that michelle isn’t necessarily a good person. i don’t mind that she’s describing the graphic childhood abuse she experienced. i don’t mind that she’s forgiven her mother (and abuser) as part of her grief. i don’t mind the prolonged recipes. this is all part of her life, her grieving process, and how she relates to her mom and heritage. it’s her right to do any of this and her job alone to deal with how any of this turns out.

what i did mind was the book blurb not adequately preparing the reader for the often jarring physical and emotional abuse she experiences through the first 25 years of her life, describing it as "struggling with her mother’s particular, high expectations of her; of a painful adolescence.” i mind that this is a show and tell of events that completely lacks any introspective thought. i want michelle to tell me now as an adult how this has impacted her emotionally and how she sees her childhood through a grown up’s eyes.

i also felt particularly disconnected from michelle throughout the memoir as i did not know she was a musician. i assumed that she was an author and therefore, perhaps unfairly, expected higher quality writing.
