Description
When a new cat arrives, a young narrator decides to hate it—at least at first—turning everyday life into a battleground of stubbornness, humor, and unexpected consequences. As the cat’s presence reshapes routines and relationships, the story follows the narrator’s shifting feelings from irritation to reluctant understanding, revealing how attachment can grow in the most unlikely ways. With its warm, accessible voice and keen attention to childhood logic, the book explores themes of empathy, change, and the difference between control and connection. Sharon Creech’s signature blend of wit and emotional clarity makes this a satisfying, heartfelt read about learning to see what’s really there.

Hate That Cat is a follow up to Love That Dog, and although I read through this sequel as quickly as the first, I was left wanting a little more as a reader in this one. We have the return of Jack and Miss Stretchberry in Room 204 and more verse and poetry to enjoy, but I feel like there was that "something" that made Love That Dog hit the heart missing from this particular story.

I still enjoyed the read and definitely would recommend to young readers who also enjoy Kwame Alexander's books.
