Description
This acclaimed debut novel plunges into the bleak winter landscape of post-war Amsterdam through the eyes of Frits van Egters, a disillusioned 23-year-old office clerk. Over ten consecutive evenings, Frits navigates a world of aimless wanderings, strained social interactions, and existential ennui, seeking meaning in the mundane. Reve's stark yet poetic prose captures the profound loneliness and quiet desperation of a generation grappling with the aftermath of war and the search for identity. A landmark of Dutch literature, *The Evenings* offers a hauntingly intimate portrait of a young man adrift in a world that feels both familiar and alien.
