Description
A man in modern Reykjavík insists he can remember the moment of his own birth in August 1962—and the extraordinary chain of events that brought him into the world. Framed as a beguiling act of storytelling, his life unfolds through intertwined strands of love, crime, and speculative inquiry: a wartime fugitive’s desperate bond, a hidden escape, and a murder mystery that reshapes what “origin” can mean. As a geneticist closes in on Jósef’s past, the narrative widens into a sweeping meditation on creation, inheritance, and the ethical stakes of rewriting life itself. With the virtuoso, genre-bending flair for which Sjón is celebrated, this epic novel fuses history, theology, folklore, and myth into an Icelandic 1001 Nights–like tapestry of wonder and dread.
