Description
When a young boy’s life is upended by a sudden move, he finds himself drawn to the mysteries of the sky—especially Jupiter and the strange, far-reaching pull it seems to hold over his thoughts. As he navigates family upheaval and the challenges of growing up, he turns to science, imagination, and the steady work of observation to make sense of what he can’t control. Blending wonder with realism, the story explores how curiosity can become a lifeline, and how relationships—messy, hopeful, and sometimes painful—shape who we become. With Gary D. Schmidt’s signature blend of emotional clarity and lyrical, accessible storytelling, this is a coming-of-age tale that reminds readers that even the most distant orbits can feel personal.

Based on recommendations I took this book off of my TBR bookcase and put it at the top of my reading queue two nights ago. Well....less than 24 hours later I was picking up the pieces of my emotions that were a wreck after reading Gary Schmidt's story of Joseph Brook and the foster family that takes him into their farming community home.

The writing and descriptions of the simple life that Jack Hurd and his family make for Joseph after his troubled past drew me into the plot right away. Without giving anything away that is not already written in the book's description I was blown away with how attached I got with these characters and was on the edge of my chair when I got to the climax of the story.

The topics covered in the story lend to an older audience of 7-12 grades, but it is definitely a "must read" for teachers and adolescents alike I feel!
