Description
In modern-day Caracas, a part-time teacher named Ulises Kan receives a devastating message from his wife—then finds his life further upended by a new, unsettling responsibility. Entrusted with transforming the grand family home, Los Argonautas, he must turn it into a shelter and veterinary clinic for stray dogs abandoned by the elites who have fled the city. As the mission unfolds, the novel builds suspense through shifting loyalties, sudden reversals, and the pressure of a society in free fall. Blending dark humor and sharp observation, it explores themes of abandonment and care, moral compromise, and the human cost of political collapse, capturing the atmosphere of Venezuela with Rodrigo Blanco Calderón’s distinctive, cinematic storytelling—brought into English by Noel Hernández González and Daniel Hahn.
