Description
Damon Galgut's multi-layered novel, The Promise, chronicles the disintegration of a white South African family over four decades, marked by four funerals. At its heart lies a broken promise made by a dying mother to her husband, Manie, regarding the family's Black maid, Salome. As generations grapple with this unfulfilled pledge and the complex legacy of apartheid, the narrative explores themes of guilt, inheritance, and the enduring consequences of moral compromise. Galgut masterfully weaves a story of familial discord and societal reckoning, revealing the deep fissures that run beneath the surface of a nation.
