Description
Jean Rhys's unfinished memoir, "Smile Please," offers a fragmented yet luminous exploration of her early life and the complex roots of her identity. Through vivid recollections, Rhys delves into her dual heritage, painting a poignant picture of her Caribbean childhood and the subsequent journey that shaped her as an outsider. This deeply personal work, contextualized by Diana Athill's insightful introduction, provides an unpolished gem of a narrative, essential for understanding the author's unique voice and experiences.
