Description
In 1970s Baltimore, fourteen-year-old Mary Jane begins a summer nannying job in what her mother believes is a proper, respectable household—only to discover a chaotic home inhabited by a psychiatrist, his unconventional family, and a rock star seeking rehabilitation. As she brings order, music, and family dinners to the household, Mary Jane is drawn into a thrilling world of artists, counterculture, and adult freedoms far beyond her sheltered upbringing. Over one transformative summer, she begins to question the rules she has inherited and imagine a more expansive future for herself. Warm, witty, and richly atmospheric, the novel explores coming-of-age, family, identity, and the liberating power of discovering one’s own voice.
