A Place for Vanishing

by Ann Fraistat

Description

In a world where memory can feel unreliable and the past refuses to stay buried, a community confronts what it means to lose—and what it takes to keep something from disappearing forever. As lives intersect across time and circumstance, the story follows characters drawn into a mystery of absence, searching for traces that may be gone but still shape the present. With lyrical, emotionally precise storytelling, the book explores themes of grief, identity, and the fragile ways we preserve meaning. Blending intimate character work with a suspenseful sense of discovery, it offers a moving meditation on disappearance, remembrance, and the places we return to when answers are not so easily found.

generally this was fine. it was pretty introspective for such a light take on mental health, given it focuses pretty heavily on the haunting situation. but it falls apart for me in the end. the resolution is convoluted and by the time we're in the final battle, there's so many "character" names to keep track of, it gets bogged down in who-what-where mid action sequence. i appreciate the ending not being a fix-it-all, but it was still quite frankly more optimistic and resolved than the page count really gave it room to be.
