Description
In a chillingly plausible alternate history, Nadine Gordimer plunges readers into the heart of a South Africa where the oppressed have risen against their oppressors. The Smales family, white liberals who once benefited from the system, are forced to flee their comfortable Johannesburg lives as a violent revolution erupts. Seeking refuge in the rural homeland of their former servant, July, they find themselves utterly dependent on those they once controlled, navigating a precarious new world order.
