Description
Set in a world where the boundary between the everyday and the uncanny is thin, these luminous tales unfold through moonlit nights, sudden storms, and encounters that test the limits of human understanding. Across a series of haunting narratives, characters confront love, loss, moral choice, and the lingering consequences of desire—often with the supernatural arriving not as spectacle, but as a mirror for the heart. Drawing on classical Japanese storytelling traditions, the collection blends lyrical atmosphere with sharp psychological insight, creating stories that feel both timeless and intimately personal. With its elegant prose and haunting restraint, this work stands as a defining example of Ueda Akinari’s ability to make folklore feel eerily modern.

for short stories written between 1771 and 1776, this was shockingly modern (and i'm not sure if that's due to the text itself or the translation/transliteration process). a few stood out as proper gothic horror akin to what you'd find in a horror movie 250 years later. then others felt contrived, repetitive, and often convoluted. it was quite literally fine and sometimes approaching a slog.
