Description

A young man uprooted from Kolkata, Satyacharan arrives in the forests and riverlands of northern Bihar to manage an estate and oversee the reclamation of land for livelihood and revenue. As he moves between the stark emptiness of the wilderness and the slow, grinding rhythms of rural life, he encounters a mosaic of people—peasants, impoverished Brahmins, migrant laborers, and adivasis—whose hopes and hardships shape his understanding of what “progress” costs. Told with the intimacy of lived observation, the novel traces a journey of adaptation and moral awakening, where beauty and deprivation coexist in the same breath. Through its quiet, unsentimental realism, the book explores themes of displacement, labor, social inequality, and the uneasy relationship between nature, authority, and human dignity.
