Description

Vern, a pregnant teenager, flees the suffocating grip of the religious compound known as Cainland, seeking refuge and a new beginning in the wilderness. As she navigates the challenges of survival and motherhood, she embarks on a profound journey of self-discovery, confronting the deep-seated trauma inflicted by her past. This powerful coming-of-age narrative explores themes of identity, freedom, and the complex relationship between the body and the spirit, as Vern grapples with the world outside the cult and the person she is becoming.

this was by all accounts an incredibly exhausting book to read and very often it did not feel like the pay off was worth the effort. there were moments of incredible longing, sci-fi, and body horror. but i often found the momentum being built up was stunted by what was more or less a total reset on the climatic plot or or pacing. vern continued to fall back through illness and missteps... and unfortunately the narrative did the same thing. i'm glad i read it and i wish it would have finished as strong as its best moments.
