Description

In an isolated Congolese town, a teacher’s life is upended when a student’s suicide note falsely claims she was pregnant with his child. As Dadou tries to hold on to love, dignity, and truth, his world is gradually dismantled by rumor, desire, and the corrosive machinery of power. Two young women, Yavelde and Yealdara, draw him into competing intimacies, while a web of political intrigue and moral compromise spreads through Valancia like a contagion. Darkly comic and deeply human, this novel by Sony Labou Tansi blends satire with tragedy to explore how institutions weaponize intimacy, how communities manufacture guilt, and how love can become both refuge and trap.
