Description
In a city reshaped by rapid urbanisation and governed by rigid patriarchal and theocratic forces, women struggle to keep their lives intact as larger powers move around them. Through a series of haunting, interconnected episodes—rehabilitation centres, unlicensed salons, strange hotels, and poetry classes that turn political in unexpected ways—Ho Sok Fong traces how desire, identity, and agency can be quietly redirected, distorted, or withheld. Her precise, disquieting prose builds a richly atmospheric world where the unsaid lingers like a ghost and everyday routines blur into the surreal. At its heart, this is a novel about the cost of control and the fragile, often contested space where women try to name themselves, speak their truths, and survive.
