Description
This compelling historical narrative follows the remarkable relationship between Leon Herckenrath, a young Dutchman, and Juliette, a woman of African descent, against the fraught backdrop of nineteenth-century slavery and colonial society. As their lives unfold across Europe and the Americas, their story illuminates the forces of race, class, power, and desire that shaped the era. Drawing on extensive archival research, the book brings a largely overlooked chapter of Dutch and Atlantic history vividly to life while examining the human cost of slavery and the complexities of love in an unequal world.
