thank you to amy zinn, from whom i received this book in return for an honest review. fortunes, feet, and the five-step girl is an incredibly unique concept that drew me in from the start and had the potential to be a smash hit of a book. there are moments throughout where zinn's writing truly shines and the narrative feels well fleshed out, hints at what this book is meant to be. like how zinn perfectly encapsulates the hardheaded stubbornness of teenagedom; where things are changing too much and you can't get what you want.

much of the book however suffers at the hands of filler attempting to connect the shining moments to each other and as a result, the poor pacing. a minor amount of editing and reformatting would make a world of change for the book, like some chapters being reordered or combined into one as well as adding the character name as headers above each POV swap. i also personally struggled early on in the book with the fatphobic descriptions of the main antagonist—this is not to say she can't be fat, but rather her monstrous ugliness and meanness quickly became synonymous with her size.

overall, i'm glad i read the book and don't regret having done so. the concept was genuinely exciting and held a lot of promise.
