Description

A small boat disaster in the English Channel leaves twenty-seven dead, and an unnamed French rescue operator—now under investigation for negligence—must relive the night through the pressure of official interrogation and the pull of private memory. As the story unfolds in three interlocking parts that blur reality and imagination, the narrator is forced to confront what responsibility means when lives are lost at the border and when the facts of a tragedy refuse to settle cleanly into a single account. Centered on migrants from diverse backgrounds, including Kurds, Africans, women, and a child, the novella examines guilt, complicity, and the stories people tell themselves to survive moral uncertainty. With an existential, Camus-like sensibility and Delecroix’s precise, haunting prose, this is a close-reading meditation on compassion, accountability, and the human cost of migration.
