Description

In 1957 Alabama, Alice Young arrives in the all-Black town of New Jessup, a close-knit community determined to preserve its independence as the civil rights movement reshapes the South. There, she falls in love with Raymond Campbell, whose secret efforts to expand New Jessup’s political power threaten the town’s fragile peace—and place everything they cherish at risk. As pressure mounts from within and beyond the community, Alice must reconcile her devotion to Raymond with her fierce desire to protect their shared home. This lyrical, thought-provoking debut explores Black joy, community self-determination, love, and the complicated choices surrounding integration and social change.
