Description

In a remote girls’ school in a newly independent African nation, five expatriate teachers find themselves cut off from the worlds they once knew—and from one another. An Afro-Indian teacher, an American Peace Corps volunteer, and three British women who have fled the constraints of home struggle with culture shock, loneliness, desire, and the lingering tensions of colonial rule. As their attempts to educate and manage the school descend into comic and unsettling disorder, the novel examines identity, displacement, power, and the fragile boundaries of civilization. With sharp observation and darkly comic energy, it offers an offbeat portrait of outsiders searching for purpose in an unfamiliar world.
