Description
In a vibrant, fast-moving story of identity and belonging, a young girl navigates the pressures of family, community, and self-definition while confronting the complicated legacy of pride. As she moves through friendships, expectations, and the shifting rules of what it means to be “enough,” her choices force her to examine where confidence ends and prejudice begins. Blending coming-of-age urgency with sharp emotional insight, the novel explores themes of heritage, resilience, and the power—and danger—of labels. Written in Ibi Zoboi’s distinctive, accessible style, it delivers a compelling, character-driven journey that resonates long after the final page.

i spend a lot of time missing my old house, my old street. the noise. the cars, the race track, the junkyard compactor, the basketballs on the pavement. but madrina is right, going forward is better. i'd rather be a stream than stagnant water.
