Description

In the early postcolonial landscape of Africa, Fama, the last chief of the once-powerful Dumbuya tribe, finds his royal inheritance turned into a burden. Mistreated by both French colonial authorities and the new African regimes that follow independence, he survives by leaning on what remains of his status—begging at ceremonies—while his wife, Salimata, fights to keep dignity and hope alive. Blending personal tragedy with a wider political reckoning, the novel explores the cost of “independence” when power simply changes hands. With its sharp, unsentimental portrayal of displacement and betrayal, the story captures the disinherited heir’s struggle to preserve identity amid the collapse of old orders.
