Description
In a city where luck is traded like currency and power is guarded by those who can bend fate, a young woman with a dangerous past is pulled into a high-stakes game of survival, secrets, and shifting loyalties. As alliances fracture and every advantage comes with a cost, she must navigate courtly intrigue, moral compromise, and the relentless pressure to become the person others need her to be. Blending sharp wit with sweeping romance and political tension, the story explores themes of destiny versus choice, the price of ambition, and how resilience can turn even “bad luck” into a weapon. With Chloe Gong’s signature blend of lyrical storytelling and emotionally charged character work, this is a fast-moving, atmospheric tale of rebellion in the face of a system built to control who gets to win.

alright here’s the situation, on march 18th 2024 i dnf’d this and kept thinking about it. then january 2nd 2025 i snagged it in a thrift store. what made me dnf it back then was about 30% unreasonable on my part, but the rest of my complaints still stand.

orion is so well written and is an utter delight of a well-utilized character in a book that isn’t about him. it’s about rosalind who has these incredible powers and traits that go absolutely unused basically the whole book. rosalind falls flat and is generally uninteresting… which is fine sure. sometimes the reader clicks with the wrong character. what really works against this book is the sheer volume of cast and organizations that are introduced rapid fire (many with aliases) and then i’m expected to keep track of them. i know this is book 3 and that i’ve started mid series, but i was advertised this as being one i could read without having read the previous 2 (which is not true.)

the biggest issue this book has that isn’t something i foolishly did to myself is that there’s over 5 POVs in this book and none of the POVs are labeled with a subheader. even more, sometimes the POV swaps two times in a single chapter. with such a vast cast, this became extremely difficult to tolerate.

thank god orion is so interesting
