Description
Blending unsettling imagination with razor-edged psychological insight, this collection brings together Kōbō Abe’s most distinctive stories, including “An Irrelevant Death,” “The Dream Soldier,” “Dendrocalia,” “The Special Envoy,” and “The Crime of S. Karma.” Across varied settings and premises, characters confront the strange logic of fate, identity, and authority as ordinary reality bends—sometimes subtly, sometimes catastrophically—toward the uncanny. Abe’s signature style fuses spare, precise prose with surreal, thought-provoking scenarios that challenge how we interpret meaning, guilt, and human agency. Together, these works explore themes of alienation, moral ambiguity, and the unsettling gap between what we believe is “normal” and what is actually true.
