Description

Set in a small Norfolk port town during the early nineteenth century, this novel chronicles the lives of the Barnard family, a trading dynasty whose respectable facade conceals a complex web of private desires and moral compromises. The patriarch, John Barnard, a man of supposed rectitude, grapples with his devotion to his troubled wife and the precarious futures of his children. As the decades unfold, shifting fortunes and evolving relationships expose the fragility of moral certainty when confronted by longing, weakness, and the relentless currents of circumstance. Through unsentimental prose and keen character insight, the narrative delves into the true costs of respectability and the quiet, persistent forces that shape lives both at sea and on land.
