Description

In postwar Germany, young Siggi Jepsen is assigned an essay on “the joys of duty” while confined to a juvenile detention center, prompting him to revisit a painful chapter from his childhood. His memories return to a remote North Sea village during the Nazi era, where his policeman father’s unquestioning obedience brings him into conflict with an artist whose work has been condemned. As Siggi struggles to understand loyalty, resistance, and responsibility, the novel explores how political tyranny infiltrates ordinary lives and personal relationships. Richly atmospheric and psychologically nuanced, this powerful work examines memory, guilt, and the lasting moral consequences of obedience.
