Description
A sharp, character-driven collection that follows a young Congolese American woman as she navigates love, ambition, and the messy comedy of everyday life. With a voice that’s both intimate and unsparing, these stories challenge the expectations placed on women—especially women of color—by refusing to treat identity as the only plot point. Across interconnected moments of awkwardness, desire, and self-invention, the book explores visibility, belonging, and the gap between how people are perceived and how they actually feel. In Téa Mutonji’s disarming, contemporary style, the result is fiction that feels startlingly familiar while insisting on new kinds of “normal.”

incredibly strong through-line, but i still managed to lose the plot a few times and was jarred out of the narrative by a couple instances of trans-exclusionary feminism
