Description

After the death of her musician father in a suicide pact with an unknown woman, Yoshie and her mother relocate to Shimokitazawa, a lively Tokyo neighborhood where small kindnesses, familiar routines, and local faces begin to loosen the grip of grief. But even as they try to rebuild their lives, Yoshie is met by unsettling dreams—her father searching for a lost phone, Yoshie reaching for him on the other end of a call—raising the question of whether the past is trying to speak. In Banana Yoshimoto’s signature blend of lyrical clarity and gently surreal detachment, the story unfolds as a coming-of-age ghost tale that treats loneliness, identity, and lovesickness with emotional honesty rather than melodrama. Through community, food, and the imperfect bonds of family, Yoshie learns how healing can arrive in quiet, unexpected ways.
