Description
This landmark collection introduces the sharp, unsettling fiction of modern Chinese literature’s pioneering voice. Through stories of troubled individuals, social outsiders, and lives constrained by convention, it examines the corrosive effects of superstition, hypocrisy, oppression, and unquestioned tradition. Satirical, compassionate, and often darkly ironic, the writing reveals the tensions between inherited culture and the urgent desire for social and personal liberation. Together, these works offer a vivid portrait of a society in transformation and a powerful critique of the forces that shape human behavior.
