Description
A luminous collection of poems that inhabits the fragile, ever-changing space of the present, Present Company brings together meditations on time, memory, mortality, and the natural world. With characteristic precision and spacious, often punctuation-free lines, the poems move between intimate perception and expansive reflections on humanity’s relationship to trees, animals, silence, and loss. Elegiac yet attentive to wonder, the collection also carries an undercurrent of resistance to violence and environmental destruction. It is a powerful example of a major American poet’s late style—quietly searching, formally distinctive, and deeply attuned to the music of language.
