Description

In an unnamed Eastern European country, Cardinal Stephen Bem survives an assassination attempt only to be abducted and taken to a guarded safe-house by men who refuse to identify themselves. As he is pressured to serve the interests of unseen powers, Bem must navigate a dangerous intersection of faith, politics, and fear—where every prayer can be interpreted as a threat. With the threat of further violence closing in, the novel explores the moral cost of compromise and the fragile boundary between spiritual authority and state control. Brian Moore’s sharp, suspense-driven style turns this into a tense, psychologically charged confrontation with power, conscience, and the meaning of courage under oppression.
