Description
When Alfred and Emma Munday retreat to an isolated country house in hopes of saving their failing marriage, they find no refuge from the tensions they have carried with them. Accompanied by their Black servant, the couple becomes enmeshed in a strange and increasingly dangerous way of life shaped by isolation, distrust, and buried resentments. As the house’s oppressive atmosphere tightens around them, the novel explores race, class, colonial power, marital disintegration, and the unsettling consequences of seeking escape. With psychological intensity and a keen eye for social unease, it offers a dark, atmospheric portrait of lives unraveling far from ordinary society.
