Description
In Maaza Mengiste's epic historical novel, the Italian invasion of Ethiopia in 1935 sets the stage for a story of resilience and defiance. When her husband is called to war, Aster galvanizes the women of their district, transforming a young orphan servant named Hirut into a fierce warrior. As Emperor Haile Selassie flees, Hirut emerges as a pivotal figure, proposing a daring plan to rally the Ethiopian army and challenge the invaders. Mengiste masterfully weaves together themes of female strength, the untold stories of women in conflict, and the brutal realities of war, drawing parallels to ancient epics while centering the experiences often erased from history.
