Description

Twenty-three strangers answer an ad for a writer's retreat, only to find themselves trapped in a remote, isolated location with no heat, power, or food. As their desperation mounts, the aspiring artists begin to share increasingly extreme and disturbing stories, each vying to become the star of the inevitable reality show documenting their ordeal. This darkly comedic and visceral novel explores the depths of human creativity and depravity when pushed to the absolute limit. Palahniuk delivers a signature blend of outrageous humor and gut-wrenching horror that will leave readers breathless.

Twenty-plus stories alternating between poems and chapters of the book, dozens of "mostly true" stories all of which are more or less disturbing.

I have a morbid fascination with anything that pushes boundaries, divides opinion and challenges the limits of taste. I wouldn't say "Haunted" breaks any ground that hasn't already been covered, however, that isn't to say it's an easy read by any means at all. Some of the stories are harder to read than others.. much, much harder. I have read this book multiple times and "Guts" still makes me squirm each and every time. Gruesome, torturous and truly horrific when you realise this is based on a true event..

It is very rare a book makes me uncomfortable in the way that "Haunted" does; alone that is an achievement. I can understand why some people do not receive this book very well although I cannot wait to find another that comes anywhere close to making me feel horrifically sickened as "Guts" does..
