Description

Set in Assam on the eve of World War II, this novel follows Henry Winton, a tea-estate manager whose comfortable authority is thrown into crisis when he becomes entangled with Ruby Miranda, an Anglo-Indian schoolteacher. What begins as a calculated attempt to control desire and preserve status quickly curdles into a volatile tangle of seduction, prejudice, and moral compromise—where a strike is “nipped in the bud,” yet conscience is not. As Henry’s fascination deepens, so do the pressures of empire, reputation, and the uneasy boundaries between communities, until deceit, adultery, and revenge close in from every side. With Malgonkar’s sharp psychological realism and morally charged storytelling—rooted in ethical questions that echo the Bhagavad Gita—this is a gripping exploration of power, arrogance, and the human cost of choices made in shadow.
