There's a Monster Behind the Door
by Gaëlle Bélem
Description
In the sun-drenched yet shadowed landscape of 1980s Reunion Island, a young girl navigates a world where unspoken traumas and simmering resentments lie just beneath the surface of everyday life. As her parents' dreams wither like an unwatered plant, she finds solace and strength in the power of stories and the written word. This coming-of-age narrative explores themes of resilience, the enduring impact of postcolonial legacies, and the defiant spirit that blooms even in the harshest environments. Through the eyes of a determined young narrator, the novel celebrates the transformative power of imagination and the courage to forge one's own destiny against a backdrop of familial discord and societal hardship.
