Description

In this incisive, deeply personal work, Roxane Gay turns her attention to Haiti—its history, its beauty, and the enduring forces that shape everyday life. Moving between reflection and reportage, she explores how national identity is formed and fractured, and how the legacies of colonialism, disaster, and diaspora continue to echo through communities and individual stories. With her signature clarity and emotional intelligence, Gay examines themes of resilience, power, and belonging while asking what it means to witness, to remember, and to care without simplifying. Part cultural meditation and part social inquiry, this book invites readers to see Haiti not as a single narrative, but as a living, complex place shaped by both struggle and strength.

after claiming independence and abolishing slavery, haiti was forced at gunpoint to sign a contract to pay 150 million francs to france, which they paid off via loans from french banks. it took 122 years and they’ve paid somewhere between 20 and 30 billion dollars in today’s money. not only does france owe haiti all of that money back, france and america owe haiti additional reparations to make up for the years of servitude, starvation, and violence they’ve suffered at the hands of western imperialism.
