Description
Set in East Prussia on the eve of World War II, this gripping historical novel follows Erik Mueller, a respected history professor, devoted family man, and decorated Gestapo sergeant whose faith in the Nazi regime is tested by the return of an old Jewish friend. When Trude Bensheim and her husband risk everything to help Jews escape persecution, betrayal places them in grave danger—and leaves Erik confronting the consequences of his own choices. As duty, friendship, guilt, and self-preservation collide, he must decide whether conscience can prevail over loyalty to a murderous regime. A provocative exploration of moral compromise and courage, the novel illuminates the human cost of complicity during one of history’s darkest eras.
