Description
In London, 1883, when the Veil between the living and the dead grows thin, violet-eyed mediums are watched, managed, and married into obedience—especially by the Royal Speaker Society. Sixteen-year-old Silas Bell, an autistic trans boy forced to perform a life he never chose, is pushed toward an arranged “Speaker wife” role until a desperate escape leads to a terrifying diagnosis: Veil sickness. Sent to Braxton’s Finishing School and Sanitorium, Silas confronts a brutal institution where students are either reshaped into acceptable futures or vanish, while the ghosts of those lost begin to plead for help. As Silas uncovers the school’s hidden cruelties, he must decide how far he’ll go to expose the truth—before the Veil, the system, and the violence of patriarchy swallow him whole. Andrew Joseph White’s sharp, atmospheric storytelling blends historical dread with searing social critique, centering trans survival, autonomy, and the cost of being forced to disappear.
