Description

In a world where lineage determines power and survival depends on what you’re willing to sacrifice, a young scion discovers that their bloodline is more than heritage—it’s a key to dangerous, hidden forces. As alliances fracture and enemies close in, the protagonist must navigate courtly intrigue, brutal supernatural politics, and the moral cost of claiming authority. With every choice, the story explores themes of identity, inherited power, loyalty, and the thin line between destiny and self-determination. Deborah Falaye delivers a fast-moving, high-stakes blend of dark fantasy and character-driven tension, drawing readers into a gripping struggle for control—over the throne, over the self, and over the blood that binds it all.

there was a really interesting concept and wonderful mythology buried at the heart of this book… but it suffered greatly at the brain rotting level of repetition and jarring pace. sloane was a complex character with faults and fears as well as an extremely clear motivation, but her monologues about what has happened, what is happening, and what will happen were nearly impossible to tolerate. also not remotely necessary for 15 year old child soldier (she keeps asserting she’s a child) to have ANY romantic subplot with an 18 year old commander of her squadron who “spares her life” by having her flogged at the whipping post.
