Description
A series of darkly comic, sharply surreal stories follows children and adults caught in grotesque, half-real systems—where bodily mishaps, hypnotic promises, and inexplicable curses collide with the everyday machinery of institutions. From a custard factory explosion to a cursed hotel for girls, a damp spa of exploitative labor, and a Margate museum staging art for public consumption, each plot turns on the unsettling gap between what society claims to offer and what it actually demands. With Grudova’s signature blend of absurdity and precision, the book skewers contemporary ideas of work, Britishness, and art-making, revealing how control can masquerade as enlightenment. Equal parts grotesque and incisive, these stories build toward a singular, startling vision of revolt—funny, unsettling, and impossible to forget.
