Description
George Saunders's "Pastoralia" plunges readers into a darkly comedic and profoundly human exploration of modern life's absurdities. The collection's title novella follows a man tasked with portraying a caveman in a theme park, a role that bleeds into his own increasingly surreal existence. Through his signature blend of biting satire and unexpected tenderness, Saunders dissects themes of labor, identity, and the desperate search for meaning in a world that often feels designed to crush the spirit. These stories are a testament to the resilience of the human heart, even when faced with the most bizarre and challenging circumstances.

Short stories are hard to get right; I rarely find these sorts of collections to be anything exceptional and unfortunately Pastoralia didn't impress me. I found all the stories to be awkward and uninteresting. None of the characters stood out as anything exceptional and Saunder's writing style was a little too dry for my liking.
