Description

In Alison Espach's sharp and witty novel, a young woman finds herself unexpectedly drawn into the orbit of a wealthy, eccentric family as she navigates the complexities of love, loyalty, and the often-absurd rituals surrounding marriage. As she becomes entangled in their lives, she uncovers hidden desires and long-held secrets that challenge her own perceptions of happiness and belonging. Espach masterfully explores themes of class, ambition, and the search for authentic connection in a world obsessed with appearances, delivering a story that is both hilarious and profoundly moving.

It took me a little while to get into this book, but once the twist hit, I was completely hooked. It’s the kind of twist you might normally see coming from far away in any other book, but with the direction the story was taking, it genuinely caught me off guard. If you feel like you’re just pushing through the beginning, trust me, keep going. It’s worth it.

What stayed with me most, though, was Phoebe’s transformation. She doesn’t have some dramatic, overnight change. Instead, her growth is quiet and internal. She starts off guarded and stuck in her own thoughts, but slowly begins to open herself up, to people, to uncertainty, and to possibility. Her “breaking out of the cocoon” isn’t about becoming someone new; it’s about finally allowing herself to step forward instead of hiding.

And I hope that one day, I can break out of my cocoon like Phoebe does.
